Punch cards are gone, but digital loyalty has a real cost
Original headline: “An ode to the loyalty punch card”
Why this matters
Digital rewards programs have replaced the paper punch card at most restaurants, but the shift comes with tradeoffs operators rarely audit. Third-party loyalty platforms charge monthly fees, take a cut of redemptions, and own the customer data, meaning you pay to run the program and still do not own the relationship. Punch cards cost nothing, required no integration, and put the customer in front of your staff every visit. The question is not which is more sophisticated. It is which one actually returns margin.
What to do
Pull your loyalty platform invoice and compare the monthly cost to redemption volume before renewing or auto-upgrading.
